1. Map the rooms and their requirements
Reception, waiting rooms, consulting rooms, treatment areas and staff offices may need different flooring systems. Identify spills, wet cleaning, infection-control requirements, acoustic expectations and the traffic in each zone. Involve the clinical team and project designer before finalising the flooring schedule.
2. Compare the three main options
| Flooring | Consider for | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Carpet tiles | Waiting areas and offices where acoustic comfort matters | Generally unsuitable for frequent wet cleaning and areas requiring an impervious finish |
| Vinyl planks | Reception and selected consulting or circulation spaces | Joints differ from welded sheet systems |
| Sheet vinyl | Clinical spaces where welded seams and coving are specified | Requires correct detailing and preparation; compliance is project-specific |
3. Ask for product evidence
Request technical data relevant to the specification: slip performance, fire requirements, wear resistance, chemical compatibility, indentation resistance and suitability for rolling loads. Confirm which test reports apply to the exact product. A general claim about a product family is not enough to confirm suitability for every clinical room.
4. Check the substrate before ordering
Floor coverings depend on the surface beneath them. Moisture, uneven slabs, residual adhesive and movement can affect the installation. Discuss testing, levelling, removal and any remediation with the installer. If an existing floor or adhesive may contain hazardous material, assessment should be arranged before disturbance.
5. Resolve the edges and junctions
Specify door transitions, thresholds, skirtings and junctions to other finishes. Where the brief calls for welded seams or coved skirtings, agree the detail, height and termination. Consider cleaning access and the movement of patients, staff and equipment.
6. Plan handover and maintenance
Agree access, installation sequence and curing times. Keep the product and adhesive manufacturer’s care instructions with the facility’s maintenance plan. For carpet tiles, retain suitable spare material; for resilient floors, confirm cleaning chemicals and equipment before use.
